It’s often said that dating in DC is A LOT like networking. You never know who you might meet. So, what better way to meet other direct marketing professionals than at a DMAW speed networking event?!

Not only was it my first time at this great venue, but it was also my first speed networking event, and I can confidently say I was not disappointed.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the kind staff, checked in, received our name badges and, most importantly, our complimentary drink tickets. This was my first time at Dacha Beer Garden, and I loved everything about this place. The signature drinks of the night were tasty, with such cute and clever names, and the small bites were delicious. I struck up a conversation with a familiar face and asked her to connect me with someone she thought I’d enjoy speaking with. And just like that, the night took off!

As a young professional who’s new to the industry, I sometimes shy away from the awkward small talk that comes with networking. But in this space, the ice was already broken. As the event kicked off, each of us received a piece of paper outlining the order in which we’d rotate through each table. Every table brought a new combination of attendees and, with it, a new and stimulating conversation.

I had the opportunity to speak with seasoned industry professionals working at both agencies and nonprofit organizations. Sharing success stories and common pain points helped bridge the gap and reminded me that, despite working in different environments, many of us are navigating similar challenges.

And then came one of my favorite surprises of the night: meeting someone who spent time living in my hometown of Jersey City, NJ! In a city as big as DC, it was such a small world moment to connect with someone who’s walked the same streets as me. We immediately had something to talk about beyond work, and it was a great reminder that networking can lead to connections you never expected to make.

I had so many amazing conversations and left with even better memories. By the end of the night, I felt like I’d made not only professional connections but also potential friends I can’t wait to see again.

It’s safe to say events like this are a great introduction to networking and definitely a must-attend in the future!

So, if you’re new to the industry, looking to meet more like-minded professionals, or just in need of something new, here are a few do's and don'ts for your next networking event!

DO:

  • Attend DMAW events like this one
  • Have your business cards or LinkedIn profile handy so you can stay in touch with new connections
  • Show up as your authentic self

DON’T:

  • Be afraid to start a conversation and make a new connection
  • Forget to enjoy the amazing food and refreshments
  • Forget to mark your calendar for the next one

Until next time! ✨
