Reflecting on My YDMAW Mentorship Experience
Last year, I had the privilege of participating in the YDMAW Mentorship Program – and to say it was transformational would be an understatement. As a young professional navigating a rapidly evolving industry, I was eager to gain more insight into career growth, best practices, and strategic thinking. What I didn’t expect was how impactful having a mentor would be, not just professionally, but personally.
From the very first session, I realized that my mentor brought a wealth of experience and perspective I simply wouldn’t have had access to at my level. In our conversations, they offered transparency into high-level decision-making, leadership strategy, and the realities of agency and client-side dynamics. They shared not just what works – but why it works, and even more importantly, what hasn’t worked and what was learned along the way.
Two specific takeaways stand out. First, my mentor gave me an insider’s look into managing cross-functional teams – highlighting real-world tools and mindset shifts needed to lead with both confidence and compassion. Second, they demystified the art of building influence within an organization, teaching me that leadership doesn’t always require a title – it’s about strategic visibility, thoughtful communication, and trust.
What made the experience especially valuable was that it wasn’t just about gaining knowledge – it was about expanding how I think. I began to see my existing connections and network differently, realizing that my peers and colleagues could be resources in unexpected ways. My mentor helped me explore how to initiate conversations, ask better questions, and pursue collaborative opportunities with confidence.
The program gave me more than professional development – it gave me a space to grow in real time, with feedback and encouragement from someone who had walked a similar path and was willing to share their map.
If you’re considering joining the mentorship program this year, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s not about formalities or checking boxes – it’s about honest conversations, powerful insights, and walking away with clarity, confidence, and a deeper sense of connection to your industry.
I’m beyond grateful for the experience and excited to continue building on everything I’ve learned.
